Al Hirja Nagar (Twinned with Newland House School Strawberry Hill) This is a primary school (grades one through five) located in Hithaya Puram (P/20), in the vicinity of Pottuvil lagoon. Currently there are three teachers in addition to the principal. As in all other schools, the principals have too many responsibilities to teach. The student population is 143 of which 139 are in the tsunami affected population. Three additional teachers have been recruited: One primary school
teacher.
Al Kalam Vidyalaya (twinned with Collis Teddington and St Saviours Paddington) This is a school from
grades one through nine located in Pottuvil town. The student population
is 817, of which 170 are in the affected population. This school originally
had nineteen teachers including the principal but three teachers have
been transferred north to their hometowns of Akkaraipattu and Kalmunai
which were severely affected by the tsunami. Twelve teachers have been recruited: Six primary school
teachers
Al Alaqza (Twinned with Kingston Grammar School and Lady Eleanor Holles) This is a school from grades one through nine located in Arugam Bay (P/5). The school has 504 students of which most are in the affected population. Originally the school had 16 teachers including the principal but five have been relocated. Six teachers have been recruited: Two English teachers
Budget Teacher Salaries (per
head per month) In order to avoid conflict with the existing teachers it is advisable to pay slightly lower salaries for the untrained teachers that will be hired and invest in further training over the next few months so that in the future they will have the qualifications to receive this level of salary independent of the current project. The salary figure suggested: Teacher Salaries (per
head per month) Given the duration of this first phase, the costs will be as follows: 6 english teachers
